Distinction (philosophy)

Why can't a squirrel be a llama?

Imagine you're sorting animals at a zoo. You know squirrels and llamas are different species; you can't switch them without changing their nature.

Aristotle's real distinction means that even though two things can share some similarities (like both being mammals), they're fundamentally different and can't be interchanged without losing their essential characteristics.

Example

A squirrel has fur, sharp claws, and a bushy tail. A llama has wool, hooves, and a long neck. They're similar but not interchangeable.

Remember this

A real distinction is when two things share some traits but are not the same and can't be swapped without altering their core identity.
