Ever wondered why a balloon stretches differently on various surfaces?

Imagine inflating a balloon on a table versus a curved surface like a bowl. The balloon stretches more on the curved surface.

The balloon's stretchiness changes because of the surface's shape, which affects how the balloon's surface bends and stretches. This bending and stretching is what we call Gaussian curvature.

Example

On a flat table (zero curvature), the balloon stretches uniformly. On a bowl (positive curvature), the balloon stretches more at the bottom.
